local groups
If you'd like to get together with like-minded people to create, share and remix offline, then consider the following groups. They have all signed up to the Remix Reading manifesto, which states the following:
- We believe that individuals and communities should be empowered to create new culture, share it in their local community and remix each others' work;
- We oppose those who would restrict our creative freedom, whether by extending laws relating to copyright, repressing new technologies or promoting a closed, proprietary future for culture;
- We will help artists collaborate in their local community;
- We will promote Remix Reading, encourage artists to share their work on the Remix Commons web site, and preach the free culture gospel.
Remix Reading
We're a volunteer-led project so the more people that give their time, the better the project can become. If you've got a little spare time and you're enthusiastic about what we do, then please get in touch. You could talk to artists about the project, organise an event, become a web site editor, join the technical group or just lend a hand whenever you feel the urge. To get involved join our mailing list and announce yourself, and check out our Free Culture UK group page, where we keep details of our activities.
Reading University Students' Union Writers' Society
The Society aims to encourage all aspects of creative writing, by offering help, encouragement and inspiration where necessary. We also aim to provide sufficient outlets to promote new work, by linking with other societies and organisations, so that original scripts, stories, poems, songs etc. can be showcased and published. We have regular meetings where we discuss submitted works so that constructive criticism can be made and individual writing styles can develop. Likewise, we know that writing does not occur naturally, so we attempt to provide inspiration for your writing through socials,workshops and meetings.
Reading University Student Bands and Live Music Society
The Society is a group of bands, promoters, producers, techies and fans all dedicated to a fantastic live music scene around Reading University. Members of the society share advice, experience and contacts across the entire spectrum of live music and student bands. The society itself puts on events termly, and produces compilation CD's every academic year summing up the previous year's talent.
