Energy and Power is a very important sector that contributes to the well being of the whole economy of the country. It is critical to the growth of the country that the energy and power industry functions smoothly and without infliction of any kind. For this, the necessary requirement is to have highly qualified and specialized professionals at the helms of industry, who fully understand and are skilled in the technicalities of this sector. For a country of the size of India, it comes as a surprise that there was no dedicated institution, which could give the students the expertise required to handle such a complex and vital industry. This situation is not entirely without its unpleasant consequences. Today, the sector is suffering from a dire deficiency of qualified and highly skilled professionals.
Understanding the seriousness of the situation, Hydrocarbons Education and Research Society, which is registered under the Societies Act, 1860 had an idea of establishing a college dedicated solely for the requirements of energy, petroleum and power industry. And true to its vision, ever since the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies turned up on the scene, more than 3000 students have benefitted from it and are right now serving at important positions in their chosen sectors.
Located at the foothills of the Himalayas, in a village named Bidholi in Dehradun, the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies offers more than 49 undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs in different disciplines. Established in the year 2003, the university has touched incredible heights in a very short time, becoming the Institute of Choice for all those who want a promising career in the energy and power sector. Its list of achievements is ever expanding, right from being the first Indian energy university recognized by UGC to becoming the first educational institute in the country to setup an in-house Bio-Diesel Laboratory. The kind of global recognition this institute has achieved is accentuated by its accreditation from the Energy Institute, United Kingdom.
Spread across an expansive area, snuggled comfortably in the scenic valley of Dehradun, the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies has excellent infrastructure. Distinctive is the word that will rightly define its labs, lecture halls, hotels and canteens and other part of the infrastructure. The labs are abuzz with experiments, where students and faculty members collaborate and perform activities necessary to maintain the innovative spirit alive. The labs are fully equipped with latest industrial tools and equipment. Each department is served by multiple laboratories, which is highlighted by the sheer number of these facilities (70 at the last count). The university has everything to make it an educational institute of international standards. The whole campus is spread over a vast area of 30 acres, christened as “Energy Acres”. The built up area of the campus is 600,000 square feet and houses more than 5000 students.
Teaching process is supported by the latest multimedia and e-learning tools. 100 multimedia classrooms adorned with the computers, and audio-visual equipment makes sure that learning is fun as well a completely immersive process. It is the first university to successfully implement the SAP solution for higher education and research.
